A backup plugin should help you recover your website, not just create an archive. Before choosing, decide what data you can afford to lose and how long your site can be offline. The answer differs for a rarely changed business site and a store receiving orders every day.
Check what the backup includes
WordPress stores content and settings in its database and uses files for themes, plugins and uploads. A complete backup needs both. Check custom files and excluded folders too. The WordPress backup documentation explains the distinction between files and database.
Choose frequency by the risk of data loss
List changes since the last backup: orders, registrations, posts or images. That interval represents what you would need to reconstruct after recovery. For a store, restore on a copy first and plan how to preserve recent orders; overwriting the live database can erase sales received after the backup.
Keep a copy outside your hosting
If the only copy is on the same server, a server failure may prevent access to it. Assess the external destination, available space and account ownership. Check whether your chosen storage feature is included in the plugin or requires a separate add-on or service. Set retention to keep several recovery points without exhausting storage.
Backup and migration are different tasks
To change domain or hosting, check migration features and archive size limits. For routine recovery, examine scheduling and restoration. The UpdraftPlus Premium item page is a starting point for comparing features; the All-in-One WP Migration guide helps assess large backups.
Test restoration before relying on it
- Create a backup and confirm it finished without errors.
- Download the copy or verify delivery to external storage.
- Restore it in a separate environment.
- Check login, images, menus and forms; for stores, test products, cart and checkout without real charges.
- Record the copy’s location, credentials and recovery procedure.
Snapshots of a theme or plugin’s files before updating can help reverse that change, but do not replace a complete files-and-database backup. Compare this role with Auto Updater and see other tools in the plugin catalog.
