An add-on depends on the main plugin to work. When it installs, shows up in the list, and its option stays unavailable, the problem is almost never in the add-on: it’s in the main plugin, which wasn’t recognized as licensed.
That’s why chasing the add-on gets you nowhere: it’s waiting for a response the main plugin isn’t giving.
The right order to check
- Is the main plugin installed and active? Sounds obvious, and it isn’t: add-ons often install without complaining even when the main plugin isn’t present.
- Is the main plugin actually working? Being active isn’t enough. Open its options panel and use a premium feature. If the main plugin is limited, the add-on will stay limited too.
- Do the versions match up? A newer add-on with an older main plugin is a common, silent cause. Update the main plugin first.
- Is the manufacturer’s Activator missing? When one exists, it’s what unlocks the whole line. See what the Activator is.
Once the main plugin is sorted out, the add-on usually starts working on its own, with no extra action needed.
Install order matters
Install and activate the main plugin before the add-on. Done the other way around, the add-on sometimes registers that the main plugin doesn’t exist and won’t redo that check on its own. If that’s what happened to you, deactivate and reactivate the add-on: that’s usually enough.
Examples that come up often
The pattern is always the same: the add-on is the visible piece, the main plugin is the piece that decides. Three ways this reaches support:
1. The add-on installs and the option won’t turn on. This is the most direct case. Multi-Tier Commissions installed, AffiliateWP on the latest version, and tiered commissions still unavailable. Before touching the add-on, check the main plugin against the four points above: that’s usually where the answer is.
2. The add-on depends on two main plugins, not one. Affiliate Forms For Gravity Forms needs both AffiliateWP and Gravity Forms active. Miss one of the two and it just sits in the list doing nothing, with no error at all. The same applies to YayMail Addon for WooCommerce Subscriptions, which needs both YayMail Pro and WooCommerce Subscriptions. Rule of thumb: when the add-on’s name mentions two products, it needs both of them.
3. The add-on doesn’t come bundled inside the main plugin’s package. This is the question that comes up the most, and it isn’t really a defect: each add-on is its own item in the catalog, with a separate page and download. Downloading the main plugin doesn’t bring the add-ons along with it. If you didn’t find it, search for the add-on’s exact name in the site’s search before concluding it isn’t here.
If the main plugin is flawless and the add-on is still stuck
At that point, open a ticket. Describe both: main plugin name and version, add-on name and version, and exactly what does (or doesn’t) show up in the menu. With those four pieces of information, it’s possible to tell whether it’s a version mismatch or something else.
